Kidnapper Cliffs celebrates 'Winery of the Year' accolade
Christmas cheer arrived early for the team at Kidnapper Cliffs when last week it was announced they'd scooped the inaugural 'Winery of the Year' accolade from respected wine commentator Raymond Chan.
Kidnapper Cliffs is a partnership between Gimblett Gravels-based Te Awa and Martinborough’s Dry River.
Chan had this to say about his choice of Kidnapper Cliffs for Winery of the Year. "The 2009 Bordeaux-varietal wines released in March are sensational, so good that I rated them all 5 stars, the Cabernet Sauvignon 20/20, the Ariki' 19.5-/20, the Malbec 19.0/20 and the Cabernet Franc 18.5+/20. It was the combination of superbly ripened fruit, the exceptionally fine extraction, surprisingly based on minimal skin maceration, and wonderful balance that made them all startling and beautiful wines."
This announcement comes hot on the heels of the Kidnapper Cliffs Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 being awarded the Red Wine of the Show Trophy at the prestigious, invitation-only Five Nations Challenge. The Kidnapper Cliffs Cabernet Franc 2009 was also awarded a prestigious Double Gold and both the Kidnapper Cliffs Ariki Merlot Cabernet Franc Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 and Kidnapper Cliffs Pinotage 2009 were awarded gold medals at what’s become known as one of the world’s most elite wine events.
All the above wines are made from fruit grown on Te Awa’s Gimblett Gravels vineyard.

Rave reviews for organic producer's first wines
Murdoch Wine's first red wines from their Gimblett Gravels vineyard, farmed organically, have already received favourable reviews from two leading wine commentators.
Writing in her regular column for Sunday Star Times, and on her own website, NZ based Master of Wine, Jane Skilton, awarded 4.5 stars and, maximum, 5 stars to the following 2009 vintage wines:
William Murdoch Cabernet Merlot Malbec - 4.5stars
William Murdoch The Guardsman - 5stars
Jane's reviews can be read here
This follows very positive reviews for the same wines, plus other Murdoch wines, last month by Raymond Chan writing on his website.

Gimblett Gravels red wines head NZ reviews by Master of Wine
Since formation of the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association in 2001, wines from the Gimblett Gravels district have won over 160 trophies and 450 gold medals in domestic wine competitions. Yet, a rating of 90 points or more (out of 100 points) from a respected international wine critic certainly helps to reinforce such domestic success in the global wine arena.
So, when Master of Wine, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, writing for the prestigious Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (issue 197, October 2011) awards twenty seven 2009 vintage red wines ratings of between 90-95 points, it can justifiably be claimed – as winemakers having been crowing from the moment the first red grapes were harvested – that Gimblett Gravels’ 2009 is an outstanding vintage - one of the finest vintages to date.
